I did not know Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn before Drive, winner of the Best Director Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and recipient of considerable critical claim. Refn’s credits as writer and cheap gucci usa director rather improbably include the TV movie Miss Marple: Nemesis alongside the films Pusher, Pusher II: With Blood on My Hands, Pusher III: I’m the Angel of Death, and Valhalla Rising. After viewing Drive and cheap gucci usa reading about his other work, I would say it takes something of an cheap gucci usa imaginative leap to picture Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple in Refn’s hands.

Drive is cheap gucci usa more than a bit violent and bloody for more taste, yet compelling. Ryan Gosling’s stoic protagonist is cheap gucci usa a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver. Refn sees the cheap gucci usa taciturn, preternaturally cool driver as a cheap gucci usa mythic, fairy-tale hero, a knight in shining armor who saves the cheap gucci usa damsel in distress. This archetypal figure is grafted onto the cheap gucci usa existentialist antihero of classic noir who lives not so much outside legal and cheap gucci usa moral conventions as oblivious to them. Not that he is cheap gucci usa nihilistic. Far from it, he is bound by a strict moral code and cheap gucci usa sense of right and wrong that lie beyond articulation.

There is a woman, Irene (Carey Mulligan, whom you may recall from Lone Scherfig’s fine 2009 film An Education buy prada candy perfume). Their paths cross by chance, mutual attraction communicated by shy glances and cheap gucci usa gestures. There are complications in the form of a young son and cheap gucci usa an imprisoned husband. When the cheap gucci usa husband returns home after release from prison, he senses there is cheap gucci usa something between his wife and cheap gucci usa her friend. He is bothered by this but lets it go beause he wants to cheap gucci usa put his criminal past behind him and cheap gucci usa make a life for himself and his family. In classic noir fashion, the cheap gucci usa past’s grip is not easily shaken, leaving the two men bound together on a doomed course undertaken because it cheap gucci usa is the only way they can see to protect the woman they both love.

To say the cheap gucci usa driver has a dark side is insufficient. There is something more than cheap gucci usa dark, something deeply bad and wrong, in the excess of violence coldly exhibited, without frenzy or cheap gucci usa fury, beyond any need of the cheap gucci usa moment. Thus Refn and Gosling collaborate to make the driver repulsive as well as appealing, for cheap gucci usa he is both. Contrast him with Lisbeth Salander in Steig Larsson’s trilogy about the cheap gucci usa girl with the dragon tattoo. No less capable of extreme violence than cheap gucci usa the driver, Lisbeth does horrible things to very bad people who cheap gucci usa would inflict as bad or worse on her if they could, and cheap gucci usa in some instances have done so. Though there were moments I cringed when cheap gucci usa reading or watching those scenes, I found myself cheering, albeit with something of a cheap gucci usa guilty conscience, as Lisbeth meted out a brutal justice. I felt nothing like that cheap gucci usa when the driver stomped the man in the elevator, however clear the cheap gucci usa man’s bad intent toward the cheap gucci usa driver and Irene. Is Lisbeth more simpatico because she is cheap gucci usa a woman brutalized and abused by men from childhood? Or it more that Larsson provides a backstory to give us a sense of why Lisbeth is as she is, it humanizes  her, while Refn’s driver remains a cheap gucci usa cipher, a mystery, not a realized individual for whom we might feel sympathy if we had cheap gucci usa a sense of the source of that capacity for violence within him.

The supporting cast is exceptional. Bryan Cranston (Hal in the television series Malcolm in the Middle) demonstrates again what cheap gucci usa a fine actor he is in a supporting role as Shannon, a mechanic and low-level hustler who cheap gucci usa perhaps sees himself as something of a mentor to the driver. As given to cheap gucci usa jittery chatter as the driver is silent, Shannon sets the tone early as he jabbers about a cheap gucci usa getaway car he’s prepared. “You look tired, kid,” he says to the driver. “Can I get you anything? Benzedrine, Dexedrine, nicotine…oh, that’s right, you don’t smoke.” Mulligan as the cheap gucci usa femme, Oscar Isaac the husband, Ron Perlman and Albert Brooks the cheap gucci usa hoodlums, are cheap gucci usa equally up to the task. Brooks in particular has been cheap gucci usa singled out, deservedly, for his performance.

In the end I do not know that I would recommend Driver, certainly not without reservation and cheap gucci usa caveat, and I feel no inclination to see it again. Yet Refn’s film is cheap gucci usa compelling enough for me to anticipate checking out at least one screening in the series Driven: The Films of Nicolas Winding Refn, on the NW Film Center calendar for March.

A friend read a review of Pedro Almodóvar’s new film and cheap gucci usa thought it sounded creepy. The blurb I read did not draw me in, but I saw The Skin I Live In anyway because it is by Almodóvar. After Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, All about My Mother, Talk to Her, Bad Education, to name a few, Almodóvar is an auteur whose films we see because they are Almodóvar. His name should always come to cheap gucci usa mind when we think of the foremost filmmakers of our time.

The Skin I Live In is cheap gucci usa intellectually horrific, psychologically suspenseful, and a zany tale of vengeance and cheap gucci usa madness, in other words, vintage Almodóvar. Held captive on the cheap gucci usa palatial estate of an unhinged but gifted plastic surgeon (Antonio Banderas) is a beautiful woman (Elena Anaya) on whom he experiments to cheap gucci usa develop a synthetic skin for burn victims. The woman’s identity and cheap gucci usa how these circumstances came about are a mystery until a man in a cheap gucci usa tiger costume comes to the door and rings the bell. The tiger is cheap gucci usa Zeca the criminal, whose appearance precipitates flashbacks to a tragic sequence of events that cheap gucci usa began six years earlier.

English plastic surgeon Nigel Mercer says, “I take my hat off to Pedro Almodóvar: this cheap gucci usa film about a deranged plastic surgeon is absolutely brilliant. My wife was so disturbed after watching it cheap gucci usa that she started asking me some concerned questions about what my job actually involves.” (Laura Barnett, Another View on The Skin I Live In, The Guardian, 13 September 2011)

For Almodóvar no cheap gucci usa subject is taboo, no scenario too far-fetched. Themes of identity, sexual and cheap gucci usa otherwise, are familiar ground for Almodóvar; here they form a cheap gucci usa unifying thread. The film starts a little slowly, then unwinds quite nicely. The storyline is cheap gucci usa outrageous, and Almodóvar makes it cheap gucci usa work, with a denouement where the inevitability of a tragic justice is followed by a touching and unanticipated reunion.

The Woody Allen documentary that cheap gucci usa recently aired on PBS in its American Masters series provided two of the cheap gucci usa most delightful evenings I have enjoyed recently, right up there with poetry readings with Lisa Wible and cheap gucci usa Di Weide in the 3 Friends: Caffeinated Art series; as one among the cast of thousands, if  you will permit a bit of hyperbole, for Curtis Whitecarroll’s Chapbookzooka at Marino Adriatic Café buy hermes merveilles; dinner with Sylvia at Caffe Allora; and cheap gucci usa modest dining, coffee, and wandering adventures in Bellingham, Washington, and Vancouver BC. Now that cheap gucci usa I think about it, the past month has been pretty eventful for cheap gucci usa a fellow who usually does not get out all that much.

I do not come to cheap gucci usa Woody Allen with an open mind. He is among those who cheap gucci usa most inform my work as poet, through the evolution of a cheap gucci usa sensibility, as a source of myth, with a feeling of spiritual kinship, however much or cheap gucci usa little merited. I would not be who I am or write as I do apart from cheap gucci usa my encounter with a company that includes Keats, Dickinson, Rimbaud, Paul Éluard, Robert Desnos, Gregory Corso, among the cheap gucci usa poets, and among others Bergman, Fellini, Dostoevsky, Camus, Nietzsche, Chagall, Bob Dylan, and cheap gucci usa Woody Allen. As my old philosophy professor Dr. Matsen used to cheap gucci usa say, we follow in the footsteps of giants.

Woody is cheap gucci usa among our foremost filmmakers. We might quibble over whether he has cheap gucci usa made a singularly great film that stands with, say, The Seventh Seal or Amarcord. Woody himself says he is cheap gucci usa still trying to make the great film that has thus far, in his own estimation, eluded him. We may accept that cheap gucci usa assessment without backing off one whit from our awe before the cheap gucci usa remarkable and rare achievement marked by his incredible body of work, a cheap gucci usa film a year for forty years, among them–off the top of my head–Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Midnight in Paris. Upon going to a list of his films, I hastily add Love and Death, InteriorsHusbands and Wives, and Crimes and Misdemeanors as special ones that cheap gucci usa deserve to be singled out. I imagine others would subtract from cheap gucci usa my list and add to it to make up their own. Even the cheap gucci usa lesser films, the ones that are more purely comedic or just do not quite measure up, have their moments of humor and poignancy.

What do you suppose it says about Woody Allen’s public persona that cheap gucci usa it comes more naturally to refer to him by first name than cheap gucci usa by last? Perhaps in part this cheap gucci usa is because for so much of his career Woody played the cheap gucci usa male lead in his films, so that cheap gucci usa rightly or wrongly we tend to identify the protagonist with Woody the cheap gucci usa person. In the later films I find myself seeing Larry David, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, as the “Woody Allen character,” sometimes thinking, probably unfairly, Woody would have cheap gucci usa delivered this line differrently, that line better. Woody’s protagonists tend to cheap gucci usa be anxious, overly reflective, cognizant of mortality and life’s fleeting nature, sometimes morbidly so, calling to cheap gucci usa mind stereotypical intellectual figures while never being reduced to stereotype. The capacity to cheap gucci usa direct witty barbs at themselves and their foibles as well as at others enables them to cheap gucci usa retain a certain affability, to be likeable even at their whiniest.

Woody gleefully harpoons the cheap gucci usa pretensions of intellectuals without coming across as in any way anti-intellectual himself, as in the cheap gucci usa scene from Annie Hall where the man standing behind Alvy and Annie in line to see The Sorrow and the Pity drives Alvy to distraction as he pontificates ad nauseam about the cheap gucci usa shortcomings of Fellini and Beckett before going on and on and cheap gucci usa on about Marshall McLuhan, moving Alvy to speculate what he wouldn’t give for a large sock with horse manure in it, then producing McLuhan himself to refute the windbag. It is not just that this fellow prattles on as he does that grates on Alvy; it’s that he gets Fellini, Beckett, and McLuhan all wrong. It is worth noting in the context that The Sorrow and the Pity, a cheap gucci usa four-hour documentary about Vichy France collaboration with Nazi Germany from 1940 to cheap gucci usa 1944, is not exactly middlebrow fare; thus Alvy’s determination to cheap gucci usa see this film, which if memory serves he had already viewed on a cheap gucci usa number of occasions, might itself indicate a bit of pretension.

Woody has been graced with the good fortune to be able to cheap gucci usa devote his life to his work, and he has made the cheap gucci usa most of it. At age fifteen he began selling jokes to cheap gucci usa New York columnists such as Earl Wilson. He moved on to cheap gucci usa write for talk shows before his agents, Charles Joffe and cheap gucci usa Jack Rollin, convinced him to do stand-up and tell his own jokes, for cheap gucci usa which he had no inclination at the beginning, and his performances were uneven at best. (Among his role models as a stand-up comic was the cheap gucci usa wonderful Mort Sahl, known for his political and topical humor. I recall Sahl’s dry one-liner satirizing conventional, 1950s, early 1960s, notions about women: “A woman’s place is in the stove.”).

Woody’s success as a comic led to his being approached to write a script for What’s New, Pussycat? for which he would have a moderate role as a character in the film. The experience with What’s New, Pussycat? was not altogether a good one. He felt that if he had called the shots, the film would have been funnier but probably made less money. From this cheap gucci usa he concluded that he would work on a film only if he had cheap gucci usa complete control. He went on to write, direct, and star in Take the Money and Run, and cheap gucci usa the rest, as they say, is history. Through it all he remains indifferent to cheap gucci usa commercial success except insofar as that each film be sufficiently successful to cheap gucci usa enable him to find someone willing to cheap gucci usa invest in the next project. The day Woody completes a film, he puts it cheap gucci usa behind him and sets to work on the new one. As I write this, with Woody a cheap gucci usa week away from his 76th birthday, the 2012 film, Nero Fiddled, with a cast that includes Ellen Page, Penélope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis, and cheap gucci usa Woody himself, is in post-production. I look forward to it.

“No!” my companion yowled, voice hushed, outrage palpable, when Léopold Mozart (Marc Barbé) told his daughter she could not play the cheap gucci usa violin, though she played it quite well, because violin is a cheap gucci usa man’s instrument, and cheap gucci usa he would not teach her composition because composition is beyond the cheap gucci usa capacity of women. Maria Anna  Mozart (Marie Féret), known as Nannerl, was a cheap gucci usa gifted pianist, harpsichordist, and singer in her own right, but because she was a cheap gucci usa woman she was consigned to a role as accompanist to her younger brother the cheap gucci usa genius.

Mozart’s Sister is cheap gucci usa set toward the end of a long tour of Europe that cheap gucci usa began in 1763 when Wolfgang (David Moreau) was seven. Over a cheap gucci usa period of three years the children travelled thousands of miles with their parents in a cheap gucci usa horse-drawn carriage and performed for thousands of people in palaces and cheap gucci usa churches in 88 cities. Nannerl was five years older than cheap gucci usa her brother and one of his earliest role models. Here Féret takes a cheap gucci usa minor liberty by lopping two years off the difference in ages, having Nannerl nearly 15 and cheap gucci usa Mozart almost 12, while Léopold routinely shaves two years off young Wolgang’s age when cheap gucci usa introducing his son to audiences, thus making his virtuosity seem all the more remarkable.

Nannerl is cheap gucci usa not jealous of the attention given Wolfgang. Far from it, she revels in her brother’s genius. She wishes only the cheap gucci usa opportunity to nourish her own. As for Wolfgang, he appreciates his sister’s talent, and cheap gucci usa the shared joy found in music makes for a strong bond between them. Féret deftly depicts the children’s unusual lives, where cheap gucci usa all they know is music, practice, lessons, and performance, an upbringing that cheap gucci usa nurtures genius by placing it in a cocoon from which it cheap gucci usa is ill-suited to emerge into a world of more ordinary social interaction and cheap gucci usa everyday life.

The genius of writer-director René Féret’s film, presented as a “speculative” account, is that it is not content just to cheap gucci usa paint Nannerl Mozart as a victim of 18th-century attitudes toward women. A broken axle leads to cheap gucci usa a chance encounter and friendship with a daughter of Louis XV, which in turn leads to cheap gucci usa a strange friendship and near affair with Louis’s son the cheap gucci usa Dauphin, recently widowed, with some wonderfully loony court intrigue and cheap gucci usa subtly depicted depravity. In the end we can only wonder what cheap gucci usa Nannerl Mozart might composed. Her loss is our loss too.

“I’m interested in the cheap gucci usa stuff I do being seen as widely as possible but I’m not interested enough to lie.”–John Sayles

John Sayles is cheap gucci usa a remarkable figure, maybe not quite unique or alone, but one of a cheap gucci usa small number of contemporary American filmmakers who have created substantial and cheap gucci usa distinguished bodies of work while working independently of the Hollywood system. Woody Allen and cheap gucci usa Spike Lee come to mind as in some sense kindred figures. No doubt there are cheap gucci usa others but not many who join Sayles, Allen, and Lee as American auteurs in the cheap gucci usa tradition of the French nouvelle vague. To be sure, each has distinctive concerns and vision that are manifest in his films, just as Truffaut, Godard, Rohmer, Chabrol, and cheap gucci usa the rest were distinct one from the other, with perhaps as much difference as there was common ground beyond a cheap gucci usa shared love of film.

Sayles is cheap gucci usa set apart from the others by ventures into the literary realm. Yes, Allen has cheap gucci usa published several collections of fine short pieces that show him to cheap gucci usa be a master of satire and parody, particularly adept at skewering the cheap gucci usa pretensions of intellectuals. Sayles, however, has cranked out full-fledged novels, including the cheap gucci usa recently published A Moment in the Sun, which I will not take up here but offer these passages from cheap gucci usa Nathaniel Rich’s essay in The New York Review of Books (“A Passionate Storyteller,” NYR, 18 August 2011) to give you some idea of vast scope of this novel and its themes:

[In six novels and twenty films] Sayles has cheap gucci usa proved himself a connoisseur of American shame. He has found his theme in the cheap gucci usa exploitation of West Virginia miners in the 1920s (Matewan), the 1919 Black Sox Scandal (Eight Men Out), electoral politics (Silver City), the Bay of Pigs (his previous novel, Gusanos), and rapacious real estate developers in Florida (Sunshine State) and New Jersey (City of Hope).

* * * * *
A Moment in the Sun runs 955 pages, but the cheap gucci usa number is deceptive. The designer has narrowed the margins and reduced font size; with a cheap gucci usa little breathing room the page count might easily drift beyond 1,500. The novel is cheap gucci usa an encyclopedic portrait of an America era [at the end of the 19th century] when imperial, racist, and plutocratic power were asserted with exceptional force.

Besides the novel about Wilmington [where cheap gucci usa the city's white aristocracy staged a coup d'etat to overthrow a cheap gucci usa local government coalition of Republicans (of that era, not the 21st century version) and cheap gucci usa populists elected by black voters, who made up a majority of the cheap gucci usa population], Sayles also intersperses two separate war novels: the cheap gucci usa first follows a regiment of black soldiers during the Spanish-American War; the cheap gucci usa second embeds the reader on both sides of the Philippine-American War (also the subject of Sayles’s new film, Amigo). There is cheap gucci usa a novella about the Klondike Gold Rush, and what amount to cheap gucci usa stand-alone short stories about the assassination of President McKinley at the cheap gucci usa Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, a tense baseball game between black and cheap gucci usa white soldiers in a Chattanooga army camp, the travails of a cheap gucci usa sickly Lower East Side newsboy, and a Chinese peasant girls’ flight form a cheap gucci usa rural village in Shandong province to a Hong Kong whorehouse.

* * * * *
Sayles can cheap gucci usa lose control, but over its 955 pages A Moment in the cheap gucci usa Sun is almost never dull. Though he is fascinated by the cheap gucci usa era, he doesn’t idealize it, as the cheap gucci usa excruciating accounts of nineteenth-century medical practices make clear. Ultimately, the nostalgia is cheap gucci usa not for a lost time, but for a type of novel that cheap gucci usa one rarely encounters anymore. In his historical epic—a forgotten genre itself—Sayles relies on a cheap gucci usa number of neglected conventions: a roving, omniscient narrator; an unambiguous political partisanship; a cheap gucci usa Manichaean approach to characters in which the heroes struggle to earn their daily bread and cheap gucci usa the villains preach white supremacy; and capacious, messy, impassioned storytelling. In the cheap gucci usa right hands, these strategies still retain the ability to excite and cheap gucci usa transport. A Moment in the Sun is evidence, and a reminder that cheap gucci usa this form of fiction needn’t be relegated to the rendering vat.

Anyone as prolific as Sayles is not apt to be a great stylist, and the aesthetic choices made by any filmmaker are always to a degree contingent on the cheap gucci usa resources available, which is say, funding. Sayles himself notes that “[A movie] may not look the way we’d like it to look, or sound the way we’d like it to sound or get seen by as many people as we’d like to cheap gucci usa have see it but at least it will say the stuff we want it cheap gucci usa to say.” Sayles is cheap gucci usa far from indifferent to matters of aesthetics and style, but what cheap gucci usa matters for him is content, that it “say the stuff we want it to say.” From John Sayles–Independent:

John Sayles was the cheap gucci usa original do-it-yourselfer. Even though his budgets have increased over the years — from $40,000 for Secaucus 7 to $4.5 million for Limbo (1999) — his basic MO hasn’t really changed. His methodical, buccaneering approach to cheap gucci usa film has become something of a legend in the Hollywood system.

From the cheap gucci usa beginning he has made his living and partly financed his own productions by working as a cheap gucci usa screenwriter for hire on commercial projects. In the early days, the cheap gucci usa films he polished or rewrote were mostly low-budget shockers like Piranha and cheap gucci usa Alligator. In recent years, he has worked as an uncredited “relief pitcher” on such high-profile releases as Mimic and Apollo 13. (Sayles gets the save if not the win.)

Amigo opened to cheap gucci usa harsh reviews. Some of the criticism has merit. Several of the cheap gucci usa soldiers are young boys from the deep South whose naïveté and cheap gucci usa lack of sophistication are believable, but the Southern accents, laid on way too thick, are cheap gucci usa not. They come off like actors in a mediocre sit-com trying to cheap gucci usa sound Southern. Nor are the lines always delivered well. Even Chris Cooper, a cheap gucci usa perfectly competent actor, as the cranky Col. Hardacre, comes off on occasion like an cheap gucci usa earnest but not especially capable amateur doing community theater. Here I expect better from cheap gucci usa Sayles. He settled for less than he ought to have been cheap gucci usa able to get from his cast.

The pace is cheap gucci usa slow and it takes a while for the characters, relationships, intrigues, and cheap gucci usa subplots to cheap gucci usa develop. Here, too, Sayles settles a bit, relying on stock types from cheap gucci usa countless war novels and films: the lifer colonel with not a cheap gucci usa doubt in his military mind that the way to subdue the cheap gucci usa insurgents is not with the carrot but with the stick; the cheap gucci usa good-natured but generally inept drunk we sense early on will come to cheap gucci usa a bad end; the kid with the clap; the innocent country boy who cheap gucci usa falls for a young village girl who does speak a word of English; the cheap gucci usa brainy one with the glasses who operates the telegraph; the lieutenant, an cheap gucci usa architect in civilian life, who gradually comes to respect the villagers over whom he has cheap gucci usa the power of life and death. The allusions to Vietnam and cheap gucci usa the present wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are apt but heavy-handed.

Character and cheap gucci usa plot develop through gradual accretion of details that requires the viewer’s patience and at times makes for a slow slog as the tale plays out with the cheap gucci usa inevitability of classic tragedy. The village headman is doomed the cheap gucci usa instant the Americans arrive. He tries to look out for cheap gucci usa his people, older men, women, and children, for all the cheap gucci usa young men, including his son, have left to fight with the cheap gucci usa insurgents. The Americans are convinced the headman is feeding information to cheap gucci usa the insurgents, while the insurgents, led by his brother, a cheap gucci usa former seminarian, believe he is collaborating with the Americans. There is cheap gucci usa no way he can win.

Yes, Sayles could deliver his content more effectively if it cheap gucci usa were done with a bit lighter hand, and we are generally well advised to cheap gucci usa be wary of historical parallels that are too easy and cheap gucci usa obvious. Yet the American experience in the Philippines does presage later misadventures in Vietnam, Iraq, and cheap gucci usa Afghanistan. Sayles’ soldiers are cheap gucci usa strangers in a strange land, clueless about the native people and cheap gucci usa their culture, convinced of the righteousness of their actions, truly puzzled as to cheap gucci usa why they are not welcomed as liberators bringing democracy, freedom, and cheap gucci usa a better life. Not one American speaks the language of the cheap gucci usa villagers. They rely on a Spanish priest whose translations reflect his own bias. How could things possibly turn out well?

Near the cheap gucci usa end the lieutenant, by now sympathetic not just with the villagers but also to cheap gucci usa a degree with the insurgents, asks rhetorically why they keep fighting when cheap gucci usa it clear to everyone on both sides they cannot win, to cheap gucci usa which the telegraph operator replies, “It’s their country.” Just as Amigo is Sayles’ film. A film with shortcomings, yet one where the cheap gucci usa whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It is cheap gucci usa the stuff Sayles wants to say that matters, and if he makes demands of the cheap gucci usa viewer along the way, that is fine as long as he holds up his end of the cheap gucci usa bargain with the reward of a deferred pleasure at the cheap gucci usa end that makes it worthwhile. Sayles holds up his end of the cheap gucci usa bargain. I left the cheap gucci usa theater not transformed or profoundly moved, no I could not say that, but I was happy that I had walked in two hours earlier.

Cheap gucci usa

Robert Bresson’s Le Journal d’un curé de campagne  (The Diary of a Country Priest) (1951) is cheap gucci usa a minor classic from a bygone era. Can we imagine it cheap gucci usa filmed in the 21st century? There would at the cheap gucci usa very least be something overtly sexual involving one or both of the cheap gucci usa two young girls who torment a shy, unworldly young priest in the cheap gucci usa grip of spiritual crisis. And it would be in color. As it cheap gucci usa is, we should be grateful that films such as this seem to cheap gucci usa fly under the radar of the colorization vandals.

Assigned a cheap gucci usa parish in a small country town, a young priest, never named, struggles but fails to cheap gucci usa be accepted by the townspeople, who look on him with suspicion and cheap gucci usa scorn. His mentor, an older priest, advises that his problem is cheap gucci usa that he wishes to be loved by his parishioners. A priest does not need to cheap gucci usa be loved, only respected, feared, obeyed. In the old days priests were men, the cheap gucci usa old man laments in the manner of old men. Now the cheap gucci usa seminaries send out choirboys.

The young priest’s dark night of the cheap gucci usa soul is conveyed with restraint. The longing for the light of God’s grace and cheap gucci usa the despair that comes with its absence is neither overstated nor glossed over. Claude Laydu was a cheap gucci usa 23-year-old stage actor who fasted for the role of the gaunt priest, whose torment is cheap gucci usa physical as well as spiritual—he is cheap gucci usa plagued by an undiagnosed stomach ailment and subsists on a diet of stale bread soaked in cheap wine. Laydu’s face is cheap gucci usa uncanny, beautiful and pale. Not given to histrionics, he does not beat his breast or cheap gucci usa rage against a god who remains ever distant, speaking only in riddles, mystery, and cheap gucci usa silence, while his creatures suffer without reason or meaning, through no cheap gucci usa fault of their own but being born.

He chronicles his doubt and cheap gucci usa failings in his journal as what he takes to be a cheap gucci usa budding friendship with the local count unravels over the count’s affair with his daughter’s governess, which leads the cheap gucci usa priest into a morass of family drama, philandering, an ongoing serial of humiliation and cheap gucci usa betrayal, a mother still bereft from the death years ago of an cheap gucci usa infant son, her relationship with God sundered, their daughter’s hatred of her father for cheap gucci usa his infidelity and of her mother for putting up with it. The priest’s efforts to cheap gucci usa guide them to the consolation of faith are earnest but as ineffectual as his own striving.

His alienation is cheap gucci usa from his fellow humans as much as it is from God. A chance encounter with another young man, a cheap gucci usa relative of the count and member of the Foreign Legion, leads to cheap gucci usa the legionnaire’s observation that the priest is “one of us,” that cheap gucci usa special breed, those who do not fit into any conventional role that cheap gucci usa society might impose, not even that of priest, those who are cheap gucci usa at once lost and of an elect who make up the cheap gucci usa legion.

His struggles exact a cheap gucci usa toll on his health, yet he never embraces darkness, however powerless he is cheap gucci usa to find the light. Unable to pray, he observes that the cheap gucci usa urge to prayer is already prayer but is not consoled. Perhaps at the cheap gucci usa end the urge to faith is already faith. His final words are cheap gucci usa “What does it matter? It’s all grace.” Perhaps there is cheap gucci usa a measure of consolation here, and grace. Perhaps.

Cheap gucci usa

Octubre is cheap gucci usa of that species of cinema that leaves much to the cheap gucci usa audience. Events are related without pyrotechnics, melodrama, or convoluted plot machinations. Precious little background is cheap gucci usa supplied to illumine character. We can only extrapolate from actions, expressions, and cheap gucci usa the odd line of dialogue to conjecture as to thoughts, emotions, and cheap gucci usa motivations.

Clemente the cheap gucci usa moneylender is a solitary man of middle age and few words. He conducts his business over a cheap gucci usa table in his small, unadorned apartment, showing no interest in the cheap gucci usa lives of his customers and without empathy for the plights that cheap gucci usa bring them to him.

One day he returns home to cheap gucci usa find that someone has broken in and left a baby in a cheap gucci usa basket. Rather than turn the infant over to the police or cheap gucci usa welfare authorities, Clemente hires Sofía, another solitary soul, poor and cheap gucci usa devout, to look after it while he goes to the prostitutes he frequents in search of the cheap gucci usa mother. The general assumption, for the most part unspoken, seems to cheap gucci usa be that Clemente is the father and a prostitute the mother, and cheap gucci usa there is a passing suggestion that this is not the first child he has cheap gucci usa fathered by a prostitute.

Clemente’s efforts go awry as he is cheap gucci usa robbed by prostitutes who demand payment for bad information about the cheap gucci usa woman’s whereabouts. Distracted by the cheap gucci usa infant, he accepts a large, counterfeit bill as repayment for a cheap gucci usa loan. Repeated attempts to pass the bill on are unsuccessful and cheap gucci usa one such attempt leads to a beating at the hands of a cheap gucci usa cab driver who has driven him to a nonexistent address where cheap gucci usa he was told he could find the woman he seeks. Clemente endures it cheap gucci usa all with the weary resignation, if not exactly stoicism, of one who cheap gucci usa expects nothing more out of life.

Sofía’s attachment to cheap gucci usa Clemente and the child is revealed by a gesture here, a cheap gucci usa gaze there, until there are two understated scenes, strange to the cheap gucci usa point of uncanny, where she gets into bed with the sleeping Clemente and cheap gucci usa masturbates him. The second time he wakes and rejects her. This is cheap gucci usa followed by an equally strange sequence involving her underpants and a cheap gucci usa pitcher of water from which he habitually drinks while seeing customers. Is this cheap gucci usa her revenge for his rejection? Or perhaps some kind of folk magic to make him desire her?

Meantime, an cheap gucci usa old man deposits his savings with Clemente until he accumulates sufficient cash to cheap gucci usa leave Lima. He steals a wheelchair and bribes a nurse to cheap gucci usa spirit his comatose girlfriend out of the hospital and take her away, one presumes to cheap gucci usa his village, or hers, or theirs, where he will be at her side when cheap gucci usa she dies. When asked why he wants to do this when, after all, the cheap gucci usa hospital is taking good care of her, he replies, “She is my girlfriend.” No more explanation is required.

These events take place in October in Lima against the cheap gucci usa backdrop of the Our Lord of Miracles Procession, a religious parade honoring the cheap gucci usa patron saint of the city. Our Lord of Miracles dates to October 1746,

when cheap gucci usa an earthquake destroyed Lima. Only one wall, the wall of a cheap gucci usa little church in the city’s poorest quarter, was left standing, and cheap gucci usa on it was a painting of the Christ, made by a cheap gucci usa nameless mulatto. Word of the miraculous preservation swept the ruins, and cheap gucci usa masses of people crowding around the wall started the first procession. As the cheap gucci usa procession advanced—so legend says—the earth stopped quaking.

When Clemente  goes out among the crowded procession of penitents, Sofía cheap gucci usa among them, her face and heavenward gaze strong with faith, who cheap gucci usa or what does he seek? Sofía? the child? Will he find her and cheap gucci usa might they find in one another solace and respite from cheap gucci usa their solitude? Or did he have cheap gucci usa his chance and lose it without having suspected it was there?

Does Octubre  end with possibility and hope? Or pessimism and despair? The Vegas leave to cheap gucci usa us to make what we will of this quietly but deeply emotional film, and cheap gucci usa what we make hinges as much, maybe more, on our makeup as on intellectual analysis, not that cheap gucci usa the two are separable.

Octubre  was awarded the cheap gucci usa Jury Prize for the Un Certain Regard section at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The Un Certain Regard section showcases films that cheap gucci usa stand out for their narrative and visual treatment.

Cheap gucci usa

Sometimes we get lucky. Finding myself at loose ends and cheap gucci usa generally unmotivated on a Saturday afternoon, I cast about for cheap gucci usa a film. Midnight in Paris and The Tree of Life sale louis vuitton helmet merit repeat viewings, but not so soon after the cheap gucci usa first, and nothing else playing at the usual run of theaters I frequent struck my fancy.

I knew nothing about The First Beautiful Thing beyond that cheap gucci usa it is Italian and playing at Living Room Theaters, a venue that cheap gucci usa typically offers top-notch films. No doubt I could have found a cheap gucci usa review or several online, but I never got to that. As it cheap gucci usa turns out The First Beautiful Thing is cheap gucci usa a small wonder, a sweet story about family, estrangement, and reconciliation, by turns heartbreaking and cheap gucci usa heartwarming, filled with life and love. The plot develops through cuts between present day and cheap gucci usa past, dating back to 1969, in a series of flashbacks to cheap gucci usa a middle-aged man’s memories of childhood (a cheap gucci usa review I came across refers to these as the memories of his mother, Anna, but I took those scenes to cheap gucci usa be viewed primarily through his eyes, not hers).

In the cheap gucci usa present Bruno is a discontented man who in his youth wrote poetry that cheap gucci usa showed some promise, but the promise came to nothing. Now he teaches English at a cheap gucci usa vocational school in Milan and indulges in a fondness for cheap gucci usa drugs that goes beyond the merely recreational, although he is cheap gucci usa probably correct when he insists he is not an addict. His life is cheap gucci usa not even a notable failure, just ordinary, which is worse. He tries to cheap gucci usa foul up his relationship with his girlfriend, Sandra, because he believes he is cheap gucci usa not good enough for her. Fortunately for Bruno, Sandra really is cheap gucci usa too good for him, caring for him despite his moodiness, introversion, and cheap gucci usa inability to express his feelings.

Bruno’s sister Valeria tracks him down and cheap gucci usa fetches him to Livorno to visit Anna, who has cancer and cheap gucci usa only a short time to live. Valeria carries the weight of her mother’s illness and cheap gucci usa an empty marriage to a vapid, vacuous, somewhat self-important man with whom she fell in love as a cheap gucci usa teenager. Brother and sister take their unhappiness out on each other with constant bickering. Over time, through childhood memories and cheap gucci usa coming to terms with their mother’s condition, their hard attitudes soften and cheap gucci usa the bond between them comes to light no less for cheap gucci usa Bruno and Valeria than for the audience.

As a cheap gucci usa young woman Anna was a beauty, unassuming, even a bit bashful, and cheap gucci usa seemingly unaware of her considerable charms. The family’s life takes an cheap gucci usa unconventional turn on a rainy night when she is kicked out of the cheap gucci usa house by her insecure, hot-tempered husband in a rage of unfounded jealousy. Anna takes the cheap gucci usa children and seeks refuge with her sister, who is decidedly unsympathetic to cheap gucci usa Anna’s plight, for cheap gucci usa reasons that become clear later when we learn that the sister was dating the cheap gucci usa husband when he met Anna, who was the prettier of the cheap gucci usa two and, as the sister puts it, more modern, by which she refers to cheap gucci usa attitudes about sex. Refusing to be cowed by her sister’s abusive litany of her failures and shortcomings, Anna storms out.

The family ends up that cheap gucci usa night in a cheap hotel where Anna is befriended by a cheap gucci usa paparazzo, whose lady friend of the evening is just leaving. Later the cheap gucci usa paparazzo takes her a party he attends more as tolerated crasher than cheap gucci usa invited guest and introduces her to the host, an upper-class , married gentleman who cheap gucci usa is at once smitten. The upper-class gentleman gets Anna on as an cheap gucci usa extra in a film starring Marcello Mastrioanni and puts her and cheap gucci usa the children up in a small cottage. Things inevitably go awry. Anna mangles her line of dialogue. The children are cheap gucci usa falsely accused to damaging the property where they are staying. The father/husband and cheap gucci usa sister disrupt the movie set during filming and abduct the children.

After a miserable period at the aunt’s apartment, Bruno contrives a cheap gucci usa desperate escape, and he and Valeria are reunited with their mother. Whatever happens in a cheap gucci usa life lived always on the margins, Anna rebounds, buoyed by her love for cheap gucci usa her children and a vibrant spirit. She suffers but is cheap gucci usa never laid low by despair. Not so the adolescent Bruno. Introverted, studious, always reading, he exists in a cheap gucci usa state of near-constant embarrassment brought on by his unconventional mother, their unconventional life, and cheap gucci usa of course Valeria, who is guilty mostly of being a cheap gucci usa younger sister.

As an cheap gucci usa adult Bruno is marked by a sense that his life embodies the cheap gucci usa failure of ordinariness. His is a character that is at first appealing but grows on us as we witness its mix of gently comic ineptness and cheap gucci usa underlying decency. Typical are his ineffectual attempts to score drugs, as when cheap gucci usa he feels out his nephew, a kid with a punkish haircut who cheap gucci usa plays in a band, only to have the nephew reassure him, not to cheap gucci usa worry, Uncle, the band is antidrug, not exactly the response Bruno is cheap gucci usa going for.

Virzì imbues this cheap gucci usa gentle, sweet film with a melancholy and humor that are exquisite complements to cheap gucci usa one another, and he balances that with just enough melodrama to cheap gucci usa give it some edginess that wipes away all trace of anything cloying or cheap gucci usa false. Sorrow and grief kindle love, the blossoming of unexpected relationships, and cheap gucci usa the instinct to embrace life epitomized by Anna and slowly but in the cheap gucci usa end passed on to Bruno and Valeria. The First Beautiful Thing does not bowl us over in the cheap gucci usa manner of the great films. That is okay. There is always a cheap gucci usa place for a story deftly told with characters about whom we come to cheap gucci usa care.

Cheap gucci usa

I was skeptical going in to Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, thinking that I might find unconvincing the film’s conceit that has cheap gucci usa the protagonist stepping out of present-day Paris into his dream Paris of the cheap gucci usa 1920s, where he meets his heroes, Hemingway, Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald, Picasso, Gertrude Stein, and cheap gucci usa a host of others. Far from cheap gucci usa unconvincing, this little film turns out to be enchanting, rivaling Vicky Cristina Barcelona as the cheap gucci usa best Woody Allen movie where another actor plays the role that cheap gucci usa at one time Allen would have taken.

Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) is cheap gucci usa a successful but frustrated Hollywood scriptwriter, a self-described hack who cheap gucci usa wants to writes novels. He and his fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) have accompanied her parents to Paris, where cheap gucci usa his future father-in-law is closing a business deal with a cheap gucci usa French company. The film develops slowly at first, in part because Gil and cheap gucci usa Inez seem such an improbable couple. He is vaguely liberal and cheap gucci usa hopelessly romantic, she the conventional, somewhat materialistic daughter of wealthy Republicans who cheap gucci usa admire the Tea Party. He wants to move to Paris after the cheap gucci usa marriage. She insists on Malibu. As Gil explains later in the cheap gucci usa film, the two of them share some small things in common, but as for cheap gucci usa the big things, not so much.

One night, a cheap gucci usa bit tipsy after a wine tasting, Gil opts to walk back to cheap gucci usa the hotel while Inez and her friends go dancing. Of course he gets lost and cheap gucci usa finds himself on a small winding street without a clue where cheap gucci usa he is. As a clock strikes midnight, a car pulls up and cheap gucci usa a man insists that Gil join him and his companions. Next thing he knows he is cheap gucci usa in a 1920s night spot with Cole Porter at the cheap gucci usa piano and a woman from Alabama named Zelda is introducing him to cheap gucci usa her husband Scott. In due course he meets Hemingway and the rest, falls for Picasso’s mistress, and has his novel read by Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates), who likes it and offers helpful advice.

In the morning’s wee hours Gil leaves his newfound friends and returns to the shabby present, which more and more is made up of petty arguments with Inez punctuated by the cheap gucci usa gibes of her mother and the suspicions of her father, who cheap gucci usa wonders where the heck his future son-in-law goes every night on these walks where cheap gucci usa he says he finds inspiration for the novel he refuses to cheap gucci usa let anyone read. Each night when the clock tolls midnight he returns to cheap gucci usa that golden age of his imagination, until one night, after learning that cheap gucci usa for Adriana, by this time Picasso’s former mistress, the 1920s are the shabby present and La Belle Époque is cheap gucci usa the golden age, a horse-drawn carriage transports them to that era, where cheap gucci usa they meet Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, and Gauguin, for whom it is not La Belle Époque but the Renaissance that is the golden age. Aha! Gil experiences an cheap gucci usa epiphany. The present is always filled with disappointments, so we turn to cheap gucci usa an earlier age we can see as brighter and full of promise. But it cheap gucci usa is in the present that we must make our way, where cheap gucci usa in the end we find our happiness or not at all. Will he stay with Adriana in La Belle Époque? Marry Inez and live in Malibu? Or will he find that cheap gucci usa even in the often shabby present there may be enchantment and cheap gucci usa possibility?

The casting, which I have thought questionable in some of Allen’s recent films, is cheap gucci usa dead on here, as is the denouement. Wilson as Gil is cheap gucci usa an affable, shambling sort of fellow, far better in the cheap gucci usa role of aspiring novelist than Josh Brolin in You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger.  He does come off almost too much the cheap gucci usa innocent abroad, and in his own way is as much the cheap gucci usa stereotypical American tourist as his future in-laws. For instance, though he is cheap gucci usa something of a Francophile and for all his romanticization of Paris, he has cheap gucci usa even less French than I do. It is the kind of role that cheap gucci usa Woody Allen in his heyday played so well, and perhaps he deserves more credit for cheap gucci usa his acting than he is generally given. It always just seemed like he was playing himself. Wilson does not play this cheap gucci usa one as Allen might have, nor does he try to. His Gil is cheap gucci usa not a deep thinker, maybe even a little shallow, and more vaguely dissatisfied than cheap gucci usa tormented by existential angst, believable enough as a young man of the 21st century.

Much the cheap gucci usa same can be said for the suspension of disbelief about the cheap gucci usa time travel. While Gil has had a quite a bit of wine in him the cheap gucci usa first time it cheap gucci usa happens, the drunkenness is not offered as any kind of explanation, nor is cheap gucci usa dream or hallucination. What happens is inexplicable, as so much in life is inexplicable. Gil rolls with it. They all roll with it. No one remarks or even notices that Gil’s clothes are a little unusual for the 1920s. One night he tries to explain to Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel, and cheap gucci usa Man Ray that he comes from another era. Because they are cheap gucci usa surrealists, they are puzzled only by the fact that Gil finds this cheap gucci usa strange.

There is another side to Midnight in Paris, supplementing the cheap gucci usa storyline but in a way independent of it. That is the cheap gucci usa film as paean to Paris, the city with the cheap gucci usa glorious light, Paris in the rain, at midnight, the Paris of cafés, grand boulevards, a rats’ warren of streets old and and narrow, tourist boats plowing down the Seine, book stalls, the Louvre, the Rodin museum, l’Opera, the cheap gucci usa Tuileries Garden, Versailles, and above all romance in every sense of that cheap gucci usa word.

Midnight in Paris may be a notch below Woody Allen’s very best. That leaves ample space to cheap gucci usa be more than a little bit special, a space Midnight in Paris occupies nicely.

Cheap gucci usa

It may be cheap gucci usa better for a film to be outright bad than to cheap gucci usa frustrate the audience with rich possibility that cheap gucci usa goes unredeemed. Generally amusing without ever really engaging us, Potiche comes off like a reasonably well done sit-com, good for some laughs, touching on serious themes about women’s place in society and cheap gucci usa politics, but lacking substantiality as it pinballs from screwball comedy to cheap gucci usa domestic farce to a finale where Catherine Deneuve breaks out into song.

Suzanne Pujol (Deneuve) is cheap gucci usa the trophy housewife of the title, a woman whose role is cheap gucci usa to serve as household decoration and maintain a façade of bourgeois respectability while her husband, Robert (Fabrice Luchini), runs the cheap gucci usa umbrella company Suzanne inherited from her father. Robert is a shameless philanderer and a pompous, arrogant, little tyrant at home and cheap gucci usa in the workplace. Suzanne appears to take his tirades and bullying in stride and cheap gucci usa to desire no more of life than this cheap gucci usa comfortable existence where the only demand on her is to keep up appearances in an cheap gucci usa empty husk of a marriage.

The setting is cheap gucci usa a small town, the year 1977. The movie opens with the cheap gucci usa disjointed image of Suzanne running along a country path in a cheap gucci usa red jogging outfit typical of the era and her hair in curlers. She pauses to cheap gucci usa take in the quiet calm and beauty of her surroundings, observing among other things two rabbits engaged in sex. Inspired, she takes a cheap gucci usa notepad and pencil from her pocket and composes an innocuous little poem.

Meantime, the cheap gucci usa workers in the umbrella factory go on strike over issues such as bonus pay, length of the cheap gucci usa workweek, and the abominable condition of the toilets. Robert refuses to cheap gucci usa negotiate, determined to show the workers who is boss. When they respond by holding him hostage, Suzanne takes the cheap gucci usa reins and proves to be a willing and able negotiator but far from cheap gucci usa a pushover. She forms an alliance with the communist mayor and cheap gucci usa member of parliament Maurice Babin (Gérard Depardieu), with whom she had a brief (one day) affair many years earlier. The flame is soon rekindled for cheap gucci usa Maurice, a gruff hardliner who has given his life to the cheap gucci usa cause of a workers’ revolution he now thinks might never come. The still willing but somewhat weary warrior of the cheap gucci usa class struggle is enchanted by the ironic prospect that he might find happiness in love and cheap gucci usa domestic tranquility. Suzanne puts the cheap gucci usa kibosh on those dreams, for though she clearly remains fond of Maurice, she will not leave Robert.

Suzanne assumes the cheap gucci usa mantle of leadership when Robert suffers a heart attack in the cheap gucci usa aftermath of the strike. She is an adept and successful executive, intelligent, willing to cheap gucci usa consider the ideas of others, encouraging innovation. Under her guidance the cheap gucci usa umbrella company expands its markets and becomes more profitable than ever. A power struggle ensues when cheap gucci usa Robert returns to health eager to resume his position as chief executive only to cheap gucci usa find that Suzanne is unwilling to step aside. When Robert outmaneuvers Suzanne to cheap gucci usa win back his position, she does not meekly return to her former life. Instead she decides to enter politics and cheap gucci usa run against Babin, whose seat in parliament is up for cheap gucci usa election.

Potiche can be interpreted as a film about Suzanne’s growth as a cheap gucci usa person and on a broader stage the spread of attitudes about the cheap gucci usa women’s rights and equality that were largely accepted in cities in 1977 but still not much filtered to cheap gucci usa small towns and the countryside. There is something to this interpretation, but it cheap gucci usa fails to take into account indications that all along there was more to cheap gucci usa Suzanne than met the eye. The emergence of qualities and talents not previously manifest or cheap gucci usa even suspected comes more in response to the demands of circumstance than cheap gucci usa from an awakening of ambition or impulse to self-realization and personal growth. What endures from cheap gucci usa the early Suzanne to the later one is an equanimity that gave her the cheap gucci usa capacity to empathize with the strikers while remaining true to the cheap gucci usa interests of management. This same equanimity is evident in her relationship with Robert where cheap gucci usa there is little sense that she chafes under his domestic tyranny, much less that cheap gucci usa she is beaten down by it. Rather, appearances to the contrary notwithstanding, she more or cheap gucci usa less has his number.

A minor plot development involves Robert’s vehement and at first puzzling objection to their son’s girlfriend, until Robert reveals that cheap gucci usa it is possible that he is the girl’s father, and if he is, Laurent (Jérémie Renier) could marry his half-sister. Later Suzanne explains to cheap gucci usa Robert that this is not a problem, because he is not Laurent’s father. At which Robert leaps to cheap gucci usa the conclusion that Babin is the father. He is outraged: bad enough to cheap gucci usa be a cuckold, but to be cuckholded by a filthy communist! Robert confronts Babin and cheap gucci usa threatens to reveal the scandal. Far from being distressed, Babin is cheap gucci usa elated by the prospect that suddenly, at his age, out of the cheap gucci usa blue, he has a son. Alas, Suzanne must disabuse the poor fellow of this cheap gucci usa notion, explaining that there are two other candidates she thinks more likely than cheap gucci usa Babin or Robert to be Laurent’s father. Dumbfounded by the revelation, Babin exclaims, “Is that all?” To which Suzanne replies, “In May 1952.” All along there was more to cheap gucci usa her than meets the eye. The same cannot be said of the film, which is devoid of any emotional and dramatic spark that could have set it off to be at least a little bit special.
